Professional Tax Help: Accountants

Many taxpayers just abhor the days leading up to April 15. Cramming tax returns is never a fun part of life, but it must be done. For preparing their taxes, many people turn to professional help in the form of accountants to do the dirty work.

Accountants are licensed professionals who know the ins and outs of taxes and finances. "Know" is an understatement – a better term would be "master". These people have undergone rigorous studies to earn the title of Certified Public Accountant (CPA). In the Unites States, CPAs are accountants who have passed the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination and have met various state education and experience requirements. If you want to avail the services of an accountant with regard to tax issues, be sure that he/she's a CPA – only licensed CPAs can give attestation and auditing opinions on financial statements.

Many taxpayers view accountants simply as professionals paid to prepare tax returns. This is a grave understatement. If you also see accountants in this light and you're going to pay for an accountant's services, you might as well get rid of old notions and get your money's worth. Accountants are more than just number-crunchers and robotic tax return geniuses. Besides, if you just want someone (or something) to compute your tax returns, then why don't you use the various tax preparation software out there in the market? Have a better use for your accountant, such as helping you obtain financial security.

Make your accountant your best friend. Have a good, trusted relationship with him. Consult with your accountant months before the deadline for filing tax returns, and make this a yearly exercise. Together, you should look at your finances and plan a strategy that will limit your taxes. Let your accountant know some (not all!) privy details about your life –when you're about to have a child, when you're planning to buy a new car, what your plans are for your kid's education. With these pieces of information, your accountant can help you chart a course for the future, a course that saves you money on taxes.

But what if you want to have this kind of accountant, but your present one doesn't fit the bill? Is he the type who just wants to meet you in April to prepare your tax returns? Well, maybe it's time you started looking for another accountant!
